A front door does a lot of work. It welcomes guests, keeps out weather and intruders, and shapes the first impression of your home from the street. If yours sticks, rattles, lets in draughts or simply looks tired, a replacement can make a bigger difference than almost any other single upgrade.

Know the signs it is time

Daylight around the edges, a frame that has warped or rotted, locks that are hard to turn and condensation between glass panels all suggest the door is past its best. If you feel a chill standing in the hallway in winter, the seal has almost certainly failed.

Choose the right material

Fibreglass is low maintenance, resists dents and can be finished to look like real wood. Steel is strong and secure at a friendly price, though it can dent. Solid wood has unmatched warmth and character but needs regular care to stay at its best.

Quick tipHold up a thin sheet of paper in the closed door. If it slides out easily anywhere around the edge, your weather seal is no longer doing its job.

Think about glass and light

Side lights, a transom above the door or decorative glass inserts can brighten a dark hallway. If privacy matters, look at frosted, textured or leaded glass that lets light in while keeping the view blurred.

Pick a style that suits the house

A craftsman home suits a door with a simple top window and chunky trim, while a colonial home looks right with raised panels. A bold colour such as deep red, teal or navy is an easy way to add personality.

Do not forget security and fit

Ask for a solid core, a multi-point locking system and a reinforced strike plate. Most important of all, make sure the door is installed by people who will level, shim and seal it properly, because even the best door performs badly if it is fitted poorly.
